Description
Not everyone has pulled shards of another man’s skull from the palm of their hand. Not everyone has stood over the bodies of friends whose lives were lost in an instant. Not everyone has struggled to face their own reflection for years on end. But anyone who has experienced trauma or adversity will resonate with Legion Rising, the unflinchingly honest account of an army officer’s journey through combat in the Iraq War and rising beyond the scars that trauma leaves behind.
Experience an honest, unedited, and occasionally humorous glimpse of the rigors of military training through Jeff’s eyes. Follow Jeff through up-close, fast-paced accounts of the thrills and dangers of combat as a Platoon Leader in Iraq. Feel the weight of the gruesome and tragic loss of eight men whose lives were lost in the line of duty. Journey with Jeff through his battle to face the scars and shadows that followed him long after his time serving in the military was over.
Through Jeff’s authentic voice and brave transparency, readers will be drawn into his story and find themselves able to relate to his struggle and ultimate rise from adversity.
This is not simply a military memoir, it’s a memoir of life – of tragedy, healing, and leadership. Through the heart-pounding stories of combat to the transparent and personal look into the process of healing, a message emerges – one that will inspire people across all walks of life.

This is a book that will change your life if you read with an open mind and heart. It is a hard read at moments that detail the true horror of war and even times of beauty both during and after. Through it all, the story of an amazing leader demonstrates the need for reflection and choice to battle what life throws at individuals. While this is a book about a man’s journey through the Iraq War and after, it is the battle of trauma that can influence anyone that has faced any type of trauma.

I started this book yesterday evening and finished this afternoon. I just couldn’t put it down.

The prologue hits home with the force of a sledgehammer. One page into the book and I’m already feeling the weight of Jeff’s story with every fiber of my being. Lauren’s elegant writing makes the raw, uncensored, and brutal reality of what these men went through even more jarring. Sharing a story like this is not only incredibly brave and commendable, but necessary. Too many suffer in silence, pretending to be fine. If you’re not moved but Jeff’s story, you need to check your pulse.

This book had me in tears. What a raw and truthful look at what soldiers go through, the emotions and scars it brings coming home, and how to overcome any horrible thing life puts in our way! It is a MUST READ! It gives hope, perseverance, and gratitude for a journey shared by Lauren’s writing.

A non-political boots on the ground account of combat. When the book began to explore post deployment activities, I began to question why we, as a country, were again submitting our best and brightest to a strategy that seems to tie one hand behind their backs. The question again arises, should we be there? The answer becomes clearer as the mid-evil barbaric punishments that the enemy militants inflict upon the civilian population.

I saw great hope in this book. To see a man’s journey into the most challenging depths of life and know he came through it with a wonderfully positive trajectory is as inspirational as it is applicable. Jeff doesn’t leave out the details. He is honest with the pain and struggles. He confronted his issues in a way I will teach my boys and hope to hold myself accountable. I have a book put back for my boys when they are old enough to read this great story of integrity and courage.
